What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone and provisioned by software. Here is what that actually changes, which phones have one, and why it matters most when you travel.

An eSIM is a SIM card that was never a card. Instead of a fingernail of plastic you slide into a tray, it is a small piece of secure hardware soldered onto your phone's board at the factory, and the details that make it your SIM are downloaded onto it as software. The "e" stands for embedded.

Everything a traditional SIM does, an eSIM does. It identifies you to the network, authenticates you, and carries the credentials that let a carrier decide you are entitled to a signal. The difference is purely in how those credentials arrive. A plastic SIM has them burned in at a factory and shipped to a shop. An eSIM downloads them over the internet, in about two minutes, from anywhere on Earth.

How a profile gets onto your phone

The credentials are packaged as an eSIM profile. When you buy a plan, the provider prepares a profile on a remote server and gives you a pointer to it — usually as a QR code, sometimes as a text string that looks like this:

That string is the whole mechanism in one line. LPA is the Local Profile Assistant, the piece of software in your phone that handles eSIMs. rsp.example.com is the address of the provisioning server. The last part is a one-time activation code identifying which profile is yours. Your phone contacts the server, presents the code, and the server releases the profile to that specific handset and no other.

That last detail matters more than any other: a profile can only be downloaded once. Once it has landed on a device, the activation code is spent. It cannot be installed on a second phone, and if you delete it from the first one it is gone permanently. This is the single most common and most expensive mistake people make with eSIMs — deleting a profile in an attempt to troubleshoot it.

Which phones have one

Broadly: iPhone XR, XS and everything since, including all the SE models from 2020 onwards; Google Pixel 3 and later; Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, the Note 20 series, and every Z Flip and Z Fold. A growing list of Motorola, Sony, OPPO, Xiaomi and Honor devices support it too, along with recent iPads, some Apple Watches and a number of Windows laptops with cellular modems.

The reliable test takes five seconds: dial *#06#. Your phone displays its identifiers, and if an EID appears alongside the IMEI, there is eSIM hardware inside. A 32-digit EID is the serial number of the embedded SIM chip itself.

One caveat that catches people out: eSIM support is sometimes regional. The same model number can ship with eSIM in Europe and without it in another market, and US models of recent iPhones have no SIM tray at all. Check your own handset rather than the spec sheet you found online.

Why it matters when you travel

The old options for data abroad were all bad. Pay your home carrier's roaming rates and hope you read the terms correctly. Find a shop at the airport, queue, show a passport, and swap in a local SIM — which means your own number is now in your wallet and anyone calling it gets nothing. Or turn data off and navigate a strange city on hotel Wi-Fi and memory.

An eSIM removes the trade-off. You buy a local data plan before you leave, install it while you still have Wi-Fi at home, and switch it on when you land. Your usual number stays in the phone, still receiving calls and texts, and your data comes from the plan you bought at a fraction of roaming prices. Nothing gets lost in a hotel room, and there is no queue.

Dual SIM, without the second slot

Because profiles are software, a phone can store several — typically eight to ten — and switch between them in settings. Most phones can only have one or two active at a time, but they can all sit there dormant, waiting.

That opens up uses that have nothing to do with travel. A work line and a personal line on one handset, with the work one switched off at the weekend. A cheap data-only plan for tethering, kept separate from your main allowance. A second local number in a country you visit often, installed once and reused every trip.

The limitations, honestly

Moving to a new phone is harder, not easier. A plastic SIM moves in ten seconds; an eSIM has to be transferred or reissued, and some carriers charge for that. Recent iPhones and Pixels can transfer profiles device-to-device, but it is not universal.

A carrier-locked handset still cannot use a third-party eSIM. The lock is enforced by the phone regardless of how the SIM credentials arrived, and a locked phone will happily download a profile and then refuse to connect — which looks exactly like faulty stock and is not.

And most travel eSIMs are data-only. You will not get a local phone number with them and you cannot receive SMS verification codes, so keep your home line installed for the bank texts.
